Professor Albert C. Yang’s Advice on Student Course Loads
Beneath the grand main gate of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) lies a highly competitive path. This year, the acceptance rate for the School of Medicine stood at a narrow 17%, while the MD-Engineer and MD-Scientist tracks were even tighter, accepting just 5% of applicants. Drawn to the innovative curriculum, incoming freshmen often rush to fill their schedules from morning to night. While such diligence is usually seen as a positive sign, Professor Albert C. Yang, who also serves as the Vice Chair of the School of Medicine, frequently advises students to scale back.
“Don’t you want to join student clubs? Or date and make boyfriends or girlfriends?” Yang asks. He emphasizes, “As a physician, you cannot afford to stop interacting with people.”
